In yoga the Third Eye Chakra is the sixth energy field in the human body. This is your sixth sense, your intuition, your inner compass.
Located in the brain at the brow or centre of your forehead, your Third Eye Chakra or Ajna is closely related to your mind’s eye and allows your mind a space for higher consciousness. Opening your third eye takes time, meditation, and specific yoga poses.
Today we learn about Headstand or Sirasana to help us open our Third Eye Chakra. This is not an easy pose and takes plenty of practice. You can start with doing it against a wall until you learn to balance yourself.
Day 16 – Opening your Third Eye through Headstand
by Alek Parkinson, Brit Labonte, and Christi Silbaugh
The Third Eye Chakra helps interpret your past, present, and future. It helps you set your path for yourself, so you can fully use your intuition, imagination, wisdom, and knowledge. It helps you see the big picture of your life, so that you can make sense of the world around you, and made decisions based on your core values, and not simply react to emotions.
It is the light at the end of the tunnel when you aren’t sure what to do, that voice inside your head is there, listen. Ajna means “to know”, “to perceive”, “to command.” The element associated with this chakra is light.
Life lessons of the Third Eye Chakra include reality checks, understanding, open mindedness, trusting your intuition and psychic abilities, self realization, and releasing repressed negative thinking. The wisdom within the third eye include seeing clearly, both symbolically and literally, intuition, wisdom, and intellect.
An imbalance within this chakra might be experienced as poor coordination, and sleep disorders, self mistrust, and difficulty making decisions.
Alek loves Headstand Pose, she says, “I have a lot of love for this pose, because it puts everything in perspective. Sometimes when life is feeling crazy, and you feel so caught up in your own mess that you feel strangled by all the knots and loose ends flying around that you can’t see your way out, what you really need is a change of view.”
This pose is great for realigning your view of the world, and understanding that it doesn’t matter if it’s right side up or right side down. Things work out when you take the right direction, and when you look at the whole instead of the pieces.
Both Headstand Pose and Tripod Headstand are great for aligning your Third Eye Chakra. We’ll show you the variations here. These are advanced poses so know yourself and your limits.
How to Do Tripod Headstand Pose
1) Start close to a wall for support. Come on to your hands and knees into a table top position. Lower the crown of the head to the floor so that the head and the two hands form the three points of a triangle.
2) Make sure your elbows are stacked on top of your wrists. Press your hands, including the finger and thumb pads deeply into the earth. Breathe out and lift the pelvic floor and lower belly in and up. Keep the pelvic floor muscles and abdominals engaged. Keep your breath in flowing into the chest and upper back.
3) Breathe out to lift the knees off the floor and begin to walk in and try placing one knee onto your upper arm. Keep the spine long, the breath flowing and the core engaged. Then repeat the other knee.
4) Begin to extend the legs up toward the ceiling. Keep hugging the legs into the midline and pressing out through the balls of the feet. Hug the legs in, core deeply engaged and hands deeply connected to the earth, and float the legs up.
WOW, you did it!
As with any exercise program you must know yourself and understand your own health before attempting.
