Adult coloring? Who’s ever heard of that? No fad, adult coloring is here to stay, because it really works at reducing stress and increasing focus. Do you remember the last time you sat in silence without a single thought running through your head? Me either!
At first, when I heard that colouring is being used as a form of meditation I scoffed. How could keeping it inside the lines really curb my inner turmoil? But once I had that sharpened box of pencil crayons in hand there was literally no looking back.
Colouring has become my solace.
Documentation of the benefits of coloring dates back to the 1900s when the famous therapist Carl Jung prescribed coloring mandalas to his patients. ”Jung saw a natural process of generating and resolving inner conflicts that brings about greater complexity, harmony, and stability in the personality” (creatingmandalas.com/psychology-of-the-mandala).
The attention required to color with detail has been proven to calm anxiety, sharpen fine motor skills, and train the brain to focus.
So, all this time I’ve been beating myself up about not having the ability to clear my mind when I should have just grabbed a 2-4 of crayons and followed my children’s lead. The only real drawback to such relaxation and focus is curtailing the drool!
With the recent influx of Paint Nights at local bars I wonder why it took me so long to join in on the fun. To be honest, painting intimidated me because it sounds way above my artistic skill set. Colouring, on the other hand is an ability all of us acquired as children. Like riding a bike it really is a talent just waiting to be rediscovered. Puzzles, painting and crosswords have similar effects including, calming the brain, lowering blood pressure, and sharpening memory. I don’t know about you but I could use a double dose of all of the above.
I find that colouring before bed, the quietest time in my home, when everyone is settled in their beds allows me to completely shut off before pulling up the covers myself. It’s also been a chance to wordlessly bond with my children, and reminds me that colouring with my Mom as a child still remains one of my favourite memories. There are even companies who have instilled Friday coloring sessions to help release the stress of the work week. I personally find myself looking for time to sit and finish my latest piece.
Coloring Book for Adults Relaxation: 50 ANIMAL PATTERNS TO COLOR This adult coloring book has over 50 animal patterns and provides hours of stress relief through creative expression. It features small and big creatures from forests, oceans, deserts and grasslands. Designs range in complexity and detail from beginner to expert-level.
Available for sale on Amazon, Stress Relieving Animal Designs is the best-selling adult coloring book on all of Amazon. Any wonder, the book is jam-packed with incredibly intricate images to color and leaves you feeling happy and calm. In between the coloring pages are cool activities like, Circle Meditation, which asks you to continue the image by drawing small circles across the page that touch each other, top, bottom, and sides. You can then color them in or draw smaller designs within the circles. You soon realize that you’ve spent some quality time with yourself, forgotten about the world around you and created something beautiful.
Going forward, I’d like to extend this feeling of inner peace to the hard working women in my life. I envision a group of girls, cocktails on the right, markers on the left. The sad part…I’ve been watching my children bond like this with friends for years and it took me this long to wake up and smell the scented markers!
