Bhujangasana or cobra pose is an asana that symbolizes the snake. In the Hindu religion there are several references to snakes as creatures of enlightenment. In yoga, the snake sometimes symbolizes the movement of chakra energies though the centre of the body until it achieves the highest form of enlightenment in crown chakra.
Snakes are known to shed their skins in order to move into a different phase of their lives. So too, we humans must shed the baggage that bogs us down in order to move forward and to live empowered lives.
As we move in this pose we open our heart centres to allow that loving energy in and to stretch our necks forward to reach our higher potential, while we ground our feet into the earth for strength.
Freedivegirl, Stephanie says “Bhujangasana or Cobra Pose is a lovely gentle backbend to open heart space and middle spine.”
“In every shape, but especially in bending, we start with Yes and we finish with Yes, but all along the way in our explorations we must establish a few No’s, so that we channel the energy into the proper spaces. In Cobra we are saying “Yes” as we begin, our intention is to open the heart so we say “Yes” to projecting our energy out through the sternum and high ribs, pressing the back of the heart forward.”
“The lower body might want to get lazy here so we say “No” to lazy lower body and press the tops of the feet down into the earth, charge our legs, inwardly spiral inner thighs, and press the pubic bone down. This action sends the energy up the spine towards the crown. As we marinate in the shape, we enjoy our breath with gratitude saying, yesssssss.”
“Start with Yes, establish No, to create boundaries for channeling energy flow, then finish the pose with Yes – gratitude for the opportunity to be in your space. So we must set up boundaries or margins in our lives in order to manifest or direct our energy flow into our chosen outlets of vocation, family, creative pursuits and pleasure.”
